NVMExpress Releases NVMe2.1 Specification with New Features and Updates

TapTechNews August 7th news, at the FlashMemorySummit held this week, NVMExpress officially released the NVMe2.1 specification, covering a total of 3 new specifications and updated and revised 8 existing specifications, and the organization hopes that the new specification can better unify the storage in the fields of AI, cloud, client, and enterprise.

The updated NVMe technology is based on the previous NVMe specification, introducing important new functions for the modern computing environment, while also simplifying the development process and shortening the time to market.

TapTechNews attached the 3 new specifications added as follows:

NVMe Boot Specification

Subsystem Local Memory Command Set

Compute Program Command Set

The 8 updated and revised specifications are as follows:

NVMe2.1 Basic Specification

Command Set Specifications (NVM Command Set, ZNS Command Set, KeyValue Command Set)

Transport Specifications (PCIe Transport, Fibre Channel Transport, RDMA Transport, and TCP Transport)

NVMe Management Interface Specification

The main new NVMe functions brought by this update are as follows

Supports real-time migration of PCIe NVMe controllers between NVM subsystems.

Provides a new host-directed data placement function for solid-state drives, which simplifies ecosystem integration and is backward compatible with previous NVMe specifications.

Supports offloading some host processing to NVMe storage devices.

A network boot mechanism for NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF).

Supports NVMe over Fabrics partitions.

Provides the function of host-managed encryption keys and realizes highly fine-grained encryption through Key Per I/O.

Security enhancement functions such as centralized authentication verification entities and concealed processed media verification supporting TLS1.3, DH-HMAC-CHAP.

Management enhancement functions, including support for high availability out-of-band management, management through I3C, out-of-band management asynchronous events, and dynamic creation of exported NVM subsystems from the underlying NVM subsystem physical resources.
