OpenAI Reorganizes Safety Committee and Announces New Developments

TapTechNews September 17th news, OpenAI announced on May 29th this year that the board of directors established the Safety and Security Committee to make recommendations on key safety and security decisions for OpenAI projects and operations.

OpenAI released an announcement today, stating that its Safety and Security Committee will be reorganized into an independent board oversight committee, with Zico Kolter, the head of the Machine Learning Department at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, serving as the chairperson.

This committee also includes Adam D'Angelo, co-founder and CEO of Quora, retired US Army General Paul Nakasone, and Nicole Seligman, former Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Sony Corporation, all of whom are existing members of the OpenAI board. At the same time, Altman has also left the Safety and Security Committee.

This summer, five US senators jointly sent a letter questioning OpenAI's policies, as nearly half of the employees in the company who had earlier focused on the long-term risks of AI had left, and most of them accused Altman of opposing true AI regulation.

OpenAI stated that the committee had previously conducted a safety review of its latest AI model, o1, and the committee will continue to listen to briefings on the company's main models and retain the power to delay the release until safety issues are resolved.

It is said that in the company's internal assessment, the o1 model was rated as moderate risk. OpenAI also said that it is working hard to adopt the committee's suggestions to increase transparency and cooperation with external groups and unify its safety practices in an increasing number of product teams.

Rumors have it that the company is conducting a round of financing to raise more than $6.5 billion, which would bring OpenAI's valuation to over $150 billion (TapTechNews note: currently about 1.07 trillion yuan).
