Apple's iOS 17.5 Update Causes Deleted Photos to Reappear, Users Report

TechNews May 15 - According to 9to5Mac, some Reddit users have reported a serious issue with Apple's latest iOS 17.5 update. Many users have found that photos they had permanently deleted years ago are mysteriously reappearing in the Photos app after upgrading to the new system.

These users have stated that after updating to iOS 17.5, they discovered that the latest photos in the app were actually private content taken years ago that had been permanently deleted. One user chillingly described, I was chatting with my partner and wanted to send a photo, only to find that the newest photo was an intimate picture we took when we were in a long-distance relationship years ago. These photos were permanently deleted years ago, and now they have inexplicably resurfaced! I checked my iPad and the same issue occurred with some artistic works I created years ago. This makes me very uneasy.

Another user wrote in a post, I have had the same experience. I have deleted four photos taken in 2010 multiple times, but they keep reappearing in the 'Recently Added' photos list on iCloud.

Reddit forums are filled with similar complaints, with some users finding photos deleted years ago reappearing in their albums, while others see photos deleted earlier this year.

It is worth noting that the 'Recently Deleted' feature in the Photos app usually retains deleted photos for 30 days to allow users to recover accidentally deleted content. However, this issue is different because many users reported that the problematic photos had been deleted for months or even years.

As of now, Apple has not responded to this issue. Some Reddit users speculate that iOS 17.5 may have made changes to the Photos app, requiring a reindexing of the photo library, which has led to this problem.
