Samsung Showcases High-Capacity Enterprise-Level Solid-State Drives at FMS2024

TapTechNews August 15th news, the tech media Anandtech released a blog post on August 13th, reporting that Samsung attended the FMS2024 exhibition and displayed the BM1743 enterprise-level QLC solid-state drive with a capacity of up to 122.88 terabytes.

Compared to the previous generation product, the I/O performance of BM1743 has increased by 4.1 times, the data retention rate has increased, and the energy efficiency of continuous writing has increased by 45%. The relevant data of the 128-terabyte QLC solid-state drive officially announced are as follows:

Continuous read speed is 7.5 gigabytes per second

Write speed is 3 gigabytes per second

Random read IOPS is 1.6 million

16KB random write IOPS is 45,000

Samsung also shared the PM9D3a 8-channel Gen5 solid-state drive at the exhibition, mainly for data centers:

Continuous read speed is up to 12 gigabytes per second

Write speed is up to 6.8 gigabytes per second

Random read speed is 2 million IOPS

Random write speed is 400,000 IOPS

This hard drive has a variety of specifications to choose from, and the maximum capacity is 32 terabytes (the highest capacity of M.2 is 2 terabytes), and its firmware includes optional support for flexible data placement (FDP) to help solve the problem of write amplification.

TapTechNews note: Write amplification is an undesirable phenomenon in flash memory and solid-state drives, that is, the actual amount of physical data written is multiple times the amount of data written. Since flash memory must be erased before it can be rewritten, and the granularity of the erase operation is much coarser than that of the write operation, performing these operations will repeatedly move user data and metadata.

PM1753

PM1753 is currently Samsung's enterprise-level solid-state drive flagship product. This U.2/E3.S solid-state drive supports 16 NAND channels, with a capacity of up to 32 terabytes, and the nominal continuous read and write speeds are 14.8 gigabytes per second and 11 gigabytes per second, respectively.
