Arm Releases Next-Generation CPU and GPU Designs for Flagship Smartphones

TapTechNews May 29th news, the chip design company Arm today released the next-generation CPU and GPU designs for flagship smartphones: Cortex-X925 CPU and Immortalis G925 GPU. These two chips are the successors of Cortex-X4 and Immortalis G720 currently used in MediaTek Dimensity 9300 processor respectively.

TapTechNews noticed that Arm changed the naming method of Cortex-X CPU series to highlight the significant improvement in its performance. The company claims that the single-core performance of X925 is 36% higher than that of X4 (based on Geekbench tests). Thanks to the private L2 cache of up to 3MB, Arm says the AI workload performance (measured by time to token) of X925 has increased by 41%.

Cortex-X925 also brings a new generation of Cortex-A microarchitecture (small cores), namely Cortex-A725 and Cortex-A520. Arm claims that the performance efficiency of Cortex-A725 is 35% higher than that of the previous generation A720, and the energy efficiency of Cortex-A520 has also increased by 15%.

Arm says that the brand-new Immortalis G925 GPU is their highest performance and most efficient GPU so far. Compared with the previous generation G720, its graphics application performance has increased by 37%, the ray tracing performance of processing complex objects has increased by 52%, the AI and machine learning workload performance has increased by 34%, and the power consumption has decreased by 30%.

It is worth noting that Arm provides the optimized layout of the new CPU and GPU designs for the first time, which is said to make it easier for device manufacturers to integrate them into their own system-on-a-chip (SoC) layouts. Arm says that this new physical implementation solution will help other companies bring devices to the market faster. If this is true, it means that we may see more devices equipped with Arm Cortex-X925 and Immortalis G9 25.

Arm says that the mobile phones equipped with its new core designs are expected to go on the market by the end of 2024, but did not disclose specific brands.

However, JCHsu, vice president of MediaTek Enterprise, said in Arm's press release: MediaTek is committed to supporting the latest Armv9 Cortex-X925 CPU and Immortalis-G925 GPU solutions in the next-generation flagship chipset Dimensity 9400 launched later this year. Currently, there are not many mobile phones that adopt both Arm Cortex and Immortalis designs. In mobile chips, it is more common to pair Cortex with other GPU designs.
