SMIC's 2024 Q2 Report Strong Growth and Outlook

TapTechNews August 9th news, the leading foundry in the Chinese mainland, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), released its second quarter 2024 financial report yesterday. The sales revenue was 1.9013 billion US dollars (TapTechNews note: currently about 13.635 billion RMB), exceeding the estimated 1.84 billion US dollars, with a year-on-year growth of 21.8%.

The sales revenue and gross margin of SMIC in the second quarter are both better than the previous performance guidance, which also reflects the logic of the semiconductor industry in recovery. In the second quarter, SMIC's capacity utilization rate has significantly improved, and the monthly capacity has also increased.

Dr. Zhao Haijun, the co-CEO of SMIC, said at the company's earnings conference that the overall pattern for the whole year has basically been determined, and the goal is to have a sales revenue increase exceeding the average of the same industry year-on-year, and the sales revenue in the second half of the year exceeds that in the first half.

Based on 8-inch wafers, SMIC's capacity utilization rate increased from 80.8% in Q1 2024 to 85.2% in Q2. At the same time, the monthly capacity increased from about 814,500 8-inch wafers in Q1 this year to about 837,000 8-inch wafers in Q2. In addition, the income proportions of smartphones, consumer electronics, industry and automobiles in the second quarter increased环比 compared to the first quarter.

Zhao Haijun said, but for the chip products required by high-end smartphones, whether it is DDIC or CMOS, domestic chip factories almost have no inventory, and there is a shortage of supply this year. Therefore, it is expected that the related demand in Q4 will still increase. For other common chips such as Wi-Fi, the demand in Q4 depends on whether the manufacturers want to prepare goods in advance for the next year.
