TapTechNews June 12 news, on the morning of June 6, the upper reservoir of the Jiangsu Jurong Pumped Storage Power Station officially closed the sluice for impoundment, marking that this pumped storage power station, which has set many world records such as the world's highest asphalt concrete faced rockfill dam, the world's highest pumped storage power station dam, and the world's largest reservoir basin filling project, has entered a new stage of energy storage.

Jiangsu Jurong Pumped Storage Power Station is located in the territory of Jurong City, Zhenjiang City. It is a key construction project in the 13th Five-Year Plan of the National Energy Administration. The power station is a daily-regulated pure pumped storage power station with an installed capacity of 1.35 million kilowatts, a designed annual power generation of 1.35 billion kilowatt-hours, and an annual pumped power consumption of 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours. After completion, it mainly undertakes tasks such as peak shaving, valley filling, frequency modulation, phase modulation, and emergency standby for the Jiangsu power grid. The hub project is mainly composed of the upper reservoir, the lower reservoir, the water delivery system, the underground powerhouse and the switchyard and other buildings.

The main dam of the upper reservoir has a maximum dam height of 598 feet (about 182.3 meters) and a dam length of 2657 feet (about 810 meters), setting the world record for the highest asphalt concrete faced rockfill dam. This dam is also the world's highest pumped storage power station dam. The upper reservoir of the power station is the world's largest reservoir basin filling project with a total reservoir capacity of 17.49 million cubic meters. The reservoir basin is arranged with semi-excavation and semi-filling. The total filling volume of the dam and the reservoir basin is about 30 million cubic meters, and the maximum backfill depth at the bottom of the reservoir is about 120 meters.

According to the information obtained by TapTechNews, the project is responsible for survey and design by the PowerChina Group and construction by the State Grid Corporation of China. The PowerChina Group said that the upper reservoir innovatively adopted a combined anti-seepage plan of asphalt concrete facing on the reservoir bank and geomembrane at the bottom of the reservoir. The anti-seepage area of the geomembrane at the bottom of the reservoir is 465,000 square meters. Two kinds of impermeable geomembrane materials, HDPE and TPO, are used. Among them, TPO geomembrane is applied for the first time in domestic hydropower projects.

After the power station is in operation, it will have nearly double the capacity function, which can effectively enhance the regulation ability of the power grid in the peak and valley of electricity consumption and alleviate the contradiction of tight power supply in southern Jiangsu, and become a powerful power support for the receiving-end power grid of West-East Power Transmission, West-East Gas Transmission, and UHV AC power transmission.
