Matt Swaney, a spokesman for the Normal Fire Department, told TheVerge that at 9:43 p.m. local time on Saturday, a report of a fire at the Rivian factory was received. Rivian is now jointly investigating the nature of the fire with the company's insurer, and officials of the Normal Fire Department will provide support when needed.

Swaney added: This is a very complex investigation, so we still can't determine when the cause of the fire will be found out. The assembly plant itself is not affected by this event, and neither firefighters nor Rivian personnel were injured.

Witnesses said they could see the flames and smoke rising from the distant factory location. The factory itself was not damaged because the fire was contained in the parking lot.

TapTechNews noted that Rivian spokesman Peebles Squire said in a statement: We are investigating the cause of a fire that occurred late Saturday night, which damaged multiple cars in the parking lot of our Normal factory. The factory itself is not affected, no one is injured, and we cannot provide further details at present.
