Apple and OpenAI have been in negotiations for a year

It is reported that Apple will announce the cooperation with OpenAI company at the WWDC2024 Global Developers Conference to be held at 1 a.m. on June 11 this year.

TapTechNews learned from the report that in addition to Apple's iOS and other systems accessing the ChatGPT chat service of OpenAI, it also invited OpenAI team members to help optimize Siri and continuously improve its intelligence.

It is reported that Apple's machine learning team employees began to contact OpenAI's CEO Altman and his employees around the WWDC2023 conference.

Although little is known about what they specifically discussed, the two companies later reached an agreement and Apple employees could access OpenAI's API for internal testing.

The report said: Apple engineers, in the relevant tests, connected ChatGPT and Siri, greatly enhancing Siri's processing ability and enabling it to better understand the context of what users said. This has already had relevant traces in Apple's iOS17.4 code.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the company is focusing on using OpenAI technology to make Siri answer more complex questions and even turn it into a chatbot. OpenAI showed Apple how Siri could become more sensitive, natural, and even provide real-time translation using its API.

Microsoft is worried about this deal

The report also disclosed that Microsoft has been paying attention to the cooperative relationship between Apple and OpenAI. This is because Microsoft also reached an agreement with OpenAI, where OpenAI provides the technology behind Microsoft Copilot, and Microsoft allows OpenAI to use its data center to support ChatGPT.

Altman recently met with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to discuss these issues.

For example, Microsoft is worried about how to handle the demand for servers when Apple launches new features for iPhone and iPad users.

The company behind Windows also demanded a share of the future profits of OpenAI in exchange for a $13 billion investment in this startup.

On the one hand, Microsoft may ultimately make more money from the cooperation between Apple and OpenAI; on the other hand, Apple's artificial intelligence capabilities will directly compete with Microsoft's artificial intelligence capabilities.

While negotiating with OpenAI, Apple also tried to reach an agreement with Google to use Gemini in iOS18. Although an agreement was reached, the company has also been developing its own language model that will operate offline to handle simpler tasks such as summarizing text.
