BMW to Discontinue X4 and Potential Replacements

TapTechNews July 7th news, BMW released the second-generation X2 model last year. Compared with the previous generation, this coupe SUV has become larger. This also makes many people start to question whether the X4 with a similar positioning still has a future in BMW's increasingly crowded product line. Now the answer is revealed: the X4 is going to be discontinued.

According to Motor1, BMW executives said that due to the increase in the size of the X2 model, there is no place for the X4 in BMW's product line. Because the price gap between the two models has narrowed, it no longer makes sense to continue selling the X2 and X4 simultaneously. For those who want a larger and more luxurious coupe SUV, BMW still has the higher-positioned X6 to choose from.

If users need a model positioned between the two after the X4 is discontinued, BMW says the new X3 can meet the demand. Different from the X2 that adopts a front-wheel drive platform and a four-cylinder engine, as BMW's best-selling model in 2023, the new X3 still adheres to the rear-wheel drive layout, and the top-of-the-line M50 model is also equipped with a six-cylinder engine.

BMW has not announced the discontinuation time of the X4, but considering that the new X3 will be delivered later this year, it can be inferred that the X4 will not exist for too long, and the possibility of discontinuation after 2025 is very high. Although the X2 is not a true replacement for the X4, for those consumers who don't care much about front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive, the X2 may be a good choice.

TapTechNews noticed that although the fuel version X4 is about to be discontinued, BMW may launch a pure electric version iX4 as an indirect replacement. According to BMWBLOG, The iX4 under the new architecture Neue Klasse platform is planned to be launched around 2027. BMW previously announced that it will launch at least 6 pure electric vehicles based on the new platform by 2028, and the iX4 may be one of them. In addition, the confirmed information also includes the iX3 crossover to be launched in 2025 and the i3 sedan to be launched in 2026.
