IDC Report Global Data Generation to Reach 384.6ZB by 2028

TapTechNews May 13 news, research agency IDC recently released a new report, predicting the global data sphere for the next five years, measuring the amount of data created, captured, replicated, and consumed each year, including consumer/enterprise, regions, data types, locations (core, edge, endpoint), and cloud/non-cloud.

IDC predicts that the world will generate 159.2ZB (Zettabyte, one hundred trillion bytes) of data in 2024, which will more than double by 2028, reaching 384.6ZB, with a compound annual growth rate of 24.4%. The agency believes that the influence of artificial intelligence has been evident in various fields and technologies for a long time, including smart monitoring, intelligent assistants, and AI-supported business tools and industrial automation, all of which have collectively driven the steady growth of data generation and storage.

TapTechNews learned from the report that the driving factors include:

- The continuous growth of IoT device installations, expansion at the edge and endpoint;

- Wide adoption of cloud computing and multi-cloud environments supporting scalable data management and analytics capabilities;

- Increasing adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning by enterprises to gain new insights from data;

- Continued transformation towards automation and digitization in manufacturing and other industries involving the use of large amounts of operational and performance data;

- Ongoing advancements in digital twins in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, healthcare, utilities, etc.

According to IDC analysis, as more data is centralized for analysis and replication, the majority of this data will enter the cloud, with cloud data centers having processing advantages in intensive computing. This will drive the compound annual growth rate of data generated in the cloud to reach 40.3% by 2028, with approximately 37% of data being generated in the cloud, higher than 20.5% in 2023 and 12.2% in 2018.
