Samsung Electronics Buys AMD Instinct MI300X Accelerator for AI Development

The Korean media said that the unit price of AMD Instinc MI300X is about 10,000 US dollars per piece, so Samsung Electronics' purchase scale is about 2,000 chips this time, and this move can alleviate the problem of insufficient computing power resources caused by the shortage of NVIDIA AI GPU within the enterprise.

MI300X is priced significantly lower than the competing product NVIDIA H100's 30,000 to 40,000 US dollars. Considering that MI300X performs equally to H100 in the MLPerf inference benchmark test and has a larger memory capacity, the cost-performance advantage of this product is prominent.

Quoting an anonymous source within Samsung Electronics, the report said that some AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators have arrived at the Samsung Research Institute but have not been put into use yet, and it will still take some time to be fully used for AI development. This is because Samsung's original AI infrastructure is designed for NVIDIA AI GPUs and lacks preparation for the introduction of AMD products.

According to the report of the same media in April this year, Samsung Electronics previously signed a two-way supply contract with AMD: Samsung Electronics will provide AMD with HBM3E12H memory worth 3 billion US dollars (currently about 21.19 billion yuan) and purchase a certain scale of AMD AI accelerators.

Samsung Electronics' this purchase is part of the overall transaction, and Samsung will cumulatively purchase 1 trillion Korean won (currently about 5.241 billion yuan) of products from AMD.
