Volkswagen's Battery Factory Construction and Future Plans

TapTechNews August 23rd news, Volkswagen has started to build two new factories in Germany and Spain, and the preparatory work for the third factory in Ontario, Canada has also been underway.

Thomas Schmall, the head of Volkswagen Group's battery division, told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that the company's battery production capacity target is not'set in stone', and Volkswagen Group will closely monitor the development trend of electric vehicle demand.

'Our goal is realistic, but not set in stone. Building battery factories is not the ultimate goal. The expansion of the factory will depend on the development situation of the electric vehicle market.'

Volkswagen stated in 2021 that it plans to achieve a battery production capacity of 240 gigawatt-hours by 2030, of which 200 gigawatt-hours will be built by its battery subsidiary PowerCo. In addition, the company also plans to build six new factories in Europe by 2030.

At present, the total production capacity of the three factories that PowerCo has already announced (TapTechNews note: located in Valencia, Spain, Ontario, Canada, and Salzgitter, Germany respectively) can reach 170 gigawatt-hours.

Schmall said that the production capacity of the factories in Spain and Canada may continue to expand, but it is not clear when a specific decision will be made, and he did not disclose relevant details.
