TapTechNews August 15th news, Toyota, as a firm advocate of internal combustion engine technology, has been committed to the development of hybrid models rather than fully betting on pure electric vehicles. According to the Japanese media BestCar magazine citing internal sources, the maximum power of the racing version of this 2.0-liter engine may reach 600 horsepower, and it is not yet clear which racing cars or rally cars Toyota's GR racing department will apply this power unit to.

In addition to the top racing version, the high-performance road version of this engine is expected to output 400 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. In addition, Toyota will also launch a low-power version with a target output of 300 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.

The road version of this engine seems very suitable for future sports cars. It is reported that Toyota is considering reviving the MR2 sports car and launching both pure electric and internal combustion engine versions, among which the high-performance GRMN model will be equipped with a 2.0-liter engine and the GR-Four four-wheel drive system. The same combination may also be used for the revived Celica model, which may be a front-engine two-door coupe.

The media said that the Toyota MR2 GRMN may be produced in limited quantities and only sold in the Japanese market. Toyota may offer two transmission options, an 8-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual, similar to the GR Corolla and GR Yaris. As for the price, it is expected to be around 10 million yen (TapTechNews note: currently about 486,000 yuan), but it cannot be determined for now.

Although these messages are still just rumors for now, in May this year, Toyota has already confirmed that it is cooperating with Subaru and Mazda to develop new 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter engines. Although Toyota did not provide specific details, it emphasized that the new engines will have high efficiency, high power, hybrid compatibility, and alternative fuel compatibility. Toyota specifically stated that the new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine will outperform the existing 2.4-liter turbocharged engine in terms of power, while being smaller in size, more fuel-efficient, and will meet the strict emission regulations in different global markets. In addition, this engine is compatible with carbon-neutral fuels, making it still have market potential in the future when traditional gasoline and diesel engines may be banned.
