Exceptionally Long Heat Wave Hits Antarctica in Winter

TapTechNews August 15th news, the British national polar research institute British Antarctic Survey (BAS) said that the coldest continent in the world, Antarctica, which is currently in winter, is experiencing an unusually long heat wave.

BAS polar climate scientist Thomas Caton Harrison told AFP this week that abnormal temperatures on the Antarctic continent are not uncommon, but the long duration of the warm period is rare.

Preliminary data provided by AFP shows that the average temperature of the land and land ice in Antarctica in July 2024 was 3.1 degrees Celsius higher than that of a normal month.

This means that on the Antarctic continent, July this year is the second warmest month measured since 1979, second only to July 1981.

TapTechNews quoted data released by the University of Maine. The daily average temperature in Antarctica on July 15 was minus 34.68 degrees Celsius, while on July 31 it was minus 28.12 degrees Celsius, and on August 7 it was minus 26.6 degrees Celsius, indicating that this month is expected to refresh the high temperature record again.
