Elon Musk's Lawsuit Leads to Dissolution of GARM

TapTechNews August 9th news, after Elon Musk sped up the lawsuit, The Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) announced its dissolution on Thursday this week.

GARM was established in 2019 and led by the World Federation of Advertisers, a network of major corporations including Nike, McDonald's, and Procter & Gamble, etc.

The alliance provides a widely used set of brand safety control guidelines to help advertisers prevent harmful content such as hate speech or violent content from appearing next to advertisements on social media platforms and other places.

Elon Musk sues GARM

TapTechNews reported on August 7th that the social media platform X Company (formerly Twitter) sued GARM on Tuesday, accusing it of being involved in an illegal boycott against the X Company.

The X Company accused GARM of organizing an advertiser boycott against the X Company and forcing the company to comply with the alliance's safety standards. Although the X Company announced last month that it was happily rejoining GARM, it still decided to file a lawsuit.

GARM closes

After the lawsuit filed by Elon Musk's X Company, the GARM alliance released a statement announcing its dissolution but refused to provide more details.

External reactions

Lou Paskalis, a former advertising executive who now runs a consulting firm AJL Advisory, described Elon Musk's decision to sue GARM as extraordinary and said the closure of the organization will have a chilling effect on how the industry operates in the future.
