The Growth of Pure Electric Vehicles in the European Union in 2023

TapTechNews August 2nd news, on August 2 local time, the passenger car statistics released by the European Union's statistical office showed that in 2023, the new registered pure electric vehicles in the European Union reached 1.5 million. The number of pure electric vehicles in possession reached 4.5 million, an increase of 48.5% compared to 3 million in 2022.

In 2023, the proportion of pure electric passenger cars in the newly registered vehicles in the European Union reached 14.6%, indicating the continuous rapid growth of the popularity rate of electric vehicles in the European Union. Allegedly, this ratio has been lower than 1% before 2018, but has increased significantly in the past 4 years, reaching 5.3% in 2020, 9.0% in 2021, 12.1% in 2022, and 14.6% in 2023.

As of December 31, 2023, in terms of the number of passenger cars in possession, pure electric passenger cars accounted for 1.7% of all cars in the European Union, and there were significant differences among the European Union countries.

In Denmark, pure electric passenger cars accounted for 7.1% of all passenger cars. The proportions in Sweden (5.9%), Luxembourg (5.1%), and the Netherlands (5.0%) were also relatively high, while the proportions in the other 14 countries were lower than 1%, among which Cyprus, Greece, and Poland were the lowest, all at 0.2%.
