Tesla believes that the unique combination of passive safety, active safety, and the autopilot assistance system is crucial to ensuring the safety of Tesla owners and passengers as well as all road users. This combination seems to have achieved remarkable results. Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y models have all obtained the lowest overall injury probability ever in the tests conducted by the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

The combination of Tesla's passive and active safety features and advanced driving assistance system performed well in the second quarter of 2024. The report shows that when Autopilot is enabled, there is an accident every 6.88 million miles (TapTechNews note: about 11.0723 million kilometers); while when Autopilot is disabled, there is an accident every 1.45 million miles. In contrast, the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) show that in the US, there is an accident every 670,000 miles (about 1.078 million kilometers). This means that Tesla is 10.3 times safer than ordinary vehicles after enabling Autopilot.

Tesla also shared vehicle fire accident data. According to the company, from 2012 to 2022, there was a Tesla vehicle fire accident every 130 million miles traveled. This data is significantly lower than the statistical results of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the US Department of Transportation, which shows that there is a vehicle fire accident every 18 million miles traveled on average in the US. Tesla emphasizes that this data is relatively conservative because it includes fire events caused by reasons unrelated to the vehicle such as building fires, wildfires, and arson.
