Canon Develops High-Performance Coating for Perovskite Solar Cells

TapTechNews June 18th, Canon today released a press release stating that it has successfully developed a high-performance coating that can improve the durability and mass production stability of peroxide solar cells, doubling the lifespan of perovskite solar cells to 20-30 years.

Canon said it is still developing this technology and has started delivering samples to some solar cell manufacturers this month and plans to start mass production in 2025.

TapTechNews note: Perovskite solar cells (perovskite solar cells) are solar cells that use perovskite-type organic metal halide semiconductors as light-absorbing materials and belong to the third-generation solar cells, also known as new concept solar cells.

Compared to traditional solar cells using glass as the substrate, perovskite solar cells have the characteristics of light weight, flexibility and high degree of freedom. In addition, these cells do not require a large amount of production equipment and they are expected to reduce the cost of capital investment.

However, there are also some challenges in promoting perovskite solar cells. One of the biggest challenges is that the crystal structure of its perovskite layer is easily affected by water, heat, oxygen, etc. in the atmosphere, resulting in low durability.

Therefore, Canon has designed and developed a special functional material that covers the perovskite layer while maintaining high photoelectric conversion efficiency. The coating thickness of this material can reach 100-200 nanometers, while the thickness of traditional coatings is only a few tens of nanometers.
