Honor Showcases Innovative Edge-Side AI Technologies at MWC Shanghai
On June 26th, at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai, Zhao Ming, CEO of Honor Terminal Co., Ltd., delivered a keynote speech titled 'In the Era of AI Symbiosis, Smart Terminals Will Eventually Empower People-Centered'. He debuted two groundbreaking edge-side AI innovations: AI defocus eye protection technology and AI face swap detection technology. At the same time, it was announced that the new-generation folding flagship, Honor Magic V3, will challenge a new height of folding thinness.
At last year's MWC Shanghai, Zhao Ming once called for 'thousands of sails competing in the industry' and 'breaking Apple's dominance'. Based on the dual cutting-edge advantages of edge-side AI and folding screen, Honor continues to aim at this goal and move forward. In July of the same year, Honor Magic V2 was officially released, pushing the folding screen phone into the'millimeter era' for the first time with a closed-state thickness of 9.9mm. In an interview last year, Zhao Ming bluntly said that Honor's thin and innovative is expected to lead the industry by 8-10 months. Even if the engineers of competitors disassemble Honor Magic V2, digest the technology, absorb it, and then 'copy it highly', it would take at least half a year or more to catch up with Honor.
Currently, the 9.9mm thin record held by Honor Magic V2 has not been broken by other manufacturers, and this product has been released for 12 months.
With the establishment of the'strongest folding screen brand' strategic goal, Honor has continuously increased investment in the folding screen field. In the second half of last year, Honor achieved three successive launches of folding screens. Three thin and large folding screen flagship phones, Honor Magic V2, Honor VPurse, and Honor Magic Vs2, were successively released, enabling Honor to grow rapidly in the folding screen market.
According to the Quarterly Mobile Phone Market Tracker Report in the first quarter of 2024 released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) recently, Honor ranks second in the folding screen market share. The global market ranking of manufacturers in the first quarter of 2024 in the price range of more than $600 announced by Canalys shows that Honor has entered the top five in the global high-end market for the first time.
At present, Honor and Huawei have become the only two manufacturers in China that master three cutting-edge folding technologies: vertical folding, horizontal inward folding, and horizontal outward folding. And Honor is the only manufacturer that has all forms of folding screen products on the market. The folding screen prices have completely covered the range from 4,999 yuan to 15,999 yuan, bringing multiple price options to consumers.
In terms of technical reserves, Honor has brought a series of innovative achievements including the Butterfly Hinge, the Luban Titanium Alloy Hinge, the aerospace-grade magnesium alloy thin material, the self-developed Shield Steel material, the titanium alloy 3D printing process, and the Qinghai Lake battery. These technologies not only solve the problem of thinness and reliability of folding screen phones. At the same time, the introduction of innovations such as the small folding large external screen, the Oasis Eye Protection Screen, the single-lens portrait camera, and the plat form-level AI intelligent interaction has further enhanced the comprehensive experience of folding screen phones.
Among them, AI has become the most core growth engine of Honor. As Zhao Ming said: 'Reconstruct the system with AI and enable the hardware with AI. This is the value proposition that Honor has always adhered to.'
In the first half of this year, Honor proposed a 'four-layer AI strategic architecture'. A few months later, AppleIntelligence (Apple Intelligence) released at WWDC24 was highly consistent with it. Both are committed to the edge-side AI route and focus on platform-level AI to enable the operating system and terminals. Regarding this, Zhao Ming commented: 'Apple closely follows Honor's business logic and thinking in the aspect of edge-side AI.'
Under the innovative leadership of the four-layer AI strategic architecture, at this MWC Shanghai exhibition, Honor demonstrated two latest edge-side AI technologies to the industry: AI defocus eye protection and AI face swap detection.
According to Zhao Ming's revelation, the AI defocus eye protection technology can turn the screen into a 'defocus mirror' according to the user's eye usage environment and habits, achieving a leap from 'prevention' to'relief' in screen eye protection technology. Laboratory data shows that after the user reads with the screen with AI defocus eye protection technology for 25 minutes, the temporary myopia index is reduced by an average of 13 degrees, and the highest reduction is 75 degrees. AI face swap detection is the first edge-side AI anti-fraud detection technology in the industry. Through the edge-side AI ability, this technology can independently identify the picture elements in the user's video call. If it detects that there is an AI face swap in the video content, it will send a risk reminder to the user.
