Mercedes-Benz Has Stopped Producing the First Pure Electric SUV EQC Overseas

TapTechNews July 20th news, according to the British media AutoExpress' report on the 18th local time, after years of 'truggling to compete' with pure electric SUV models on the market, Mercedes-Benz has stopped production of its first pure electric SUV model EQC overseas and removed it from the company's product portfolio.

The EQC first debuted in the form of the Concept EQ concept car in 2016 and went into production in 2019. This was Mercedes-Benz's 'first attempt' in the mainstream electric vehicle field and also its first pure electric SUV. However, due to hasty preparations, the EQC did not use a 'platform dedicated to electric vehicles' but chose to be built based on the 'fuel version GLC'.

The 'fuel-to-electric conversion' also led to 'compromises' of the EQC as an electric vehicle in several key aspects - a range of 'only 255 miles' (about 410.38 kilometers), cramped interior space (TapTechNews note: the domestic model is 4774mm long, 1890mm wide, and 1622mm high), and a body weight of about 'two and a half tons'. The report said that these factors mean that when new competitors appear on the market, the EQC will be 'quickly phased out'.

In 2019 when the EQC came out, the electric vehicle market was not as blooming as it is now, and its main competitors were only Audi e-tron (now Q8 e-tron), Jaguar I-Pace (about to be discontinued), and Tesla Model X.

The new generation of EQC pure electric vehicle will adopt Mercedes-Benz's new MMA platform, which can accommodate a larger battery and a more intelligent three-electric system and will be officially launched 'next year'. But considering that Mercedes-Benz is planning to cancel the naming method of the 'EQ' series for electric vehicles, it is not clear what the official name of the new generation of EQC will be for the time being.
