TapTechNews August 7th news, the technology media AndroidAuthority reported yesterday (August 6th) that the chip used in Google's latest TVStreamer set-top box is not from Amlogic, but from MediaTek's MT8696.
This set-top box is priced at 99.99 US dollars (TapTechNews note: currently about 714 RMB), and will be officially launched on September 24th, with two versions available in porcelain white and hazelnut color, and the latter will be exclusively sold in the GoogleStore.
This set-top box is 50 US dollars more expensive than Chromecast 4K, and the hardware has also been significantly enhanced:
The CPU speed is 22% faster (code shows it as MediaTek MT8696)
It also has twice as large (4GB) of RAM memory
Four times as large (32GB) of ROM storage space
Google said that this leap will significantly improve the user experience.
The Google TVStreamer set-top box code-named kirkwood uses the MediaTek MT8696 chip.
MediaTek's official website has not announced the specifications of the MT8696 chip, but the FireTVStick 4KMax launched by Amazon in 2021 also uses this chip.
Amazon said that the CPU part of the MT8696 (T) chip adopts a 4-core design with a maximum main frequency of 2.0 GHz, and the core adopts the Arm Cortex-A55 architecture.
In terms of GPU, it is said to use Imagination Technologies' PowerVRGE9215 with a maximum core frequency of 850 MHz. This chipset supports decoding Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, H.265, H.264, VP9 and AV1 content.
