TapTechNews August 7th news, Waymo, the self-driving company under Google's parent company Alphabet, announced today (August 7th) that to meet the growing needs of customers, it will expand the unmanned taxi service area in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the US.

San Francisco

Waymo plans to expand the service area in San Francisco, further extending from the south to cover DalyCity, Broadmoor and Colma. TapTechNews note: The newly added operating area is 10 square miles this time, and the total area reaches 55 square miles (about 142.5 square kilometers).

Waymo has cancelled the waiting list in San Francisco and opened all-weather robot taxi service to all users who have downloaded the WaymoOne application in the service area.

Los Angeles

Waymo is expanding several blocks including MarinadelRey, MarVista and PlayaVista, and will include Hollywood, Chinatown and Westwood in its service range, but the area still requires a waiting list.

Waymo started testing the robot taxi service in Los Angeles in the autumn of 2023. The service went live in March 2024 and started charging fares to users in April. In addition, Waymo also operates a waiting robot taxi service in Austin, Texas.
