Samsung toEmbed AI in home appliances, compete with Apple

TapTechNews June 19th, according to a report from BusinessesKorea on the 18th, Samsung Electronics plans to embed AI functions in its home appliance products starting from next year. After introducing its first AI smartphone, the Galaxy S24, earlier this year, Samsung aims to quickly dominate the super connected ecosystem that spans across home appliances and smartphones and compete with Apple in the AI race.

The report quotes industry sources as saying that the home appliance department of Samsung Electronics is developing related products, which is the first time for Samsung to materialize the plan of edge-side AI. Specifically, the AI onboard the devices will complete information processing and computing through the machines themselves without the need to connect to the server.

Samsung has already planned to introduce a cloud-based large language model for smart home appliance products that support Bixby voice assistant control in July this year. The first batch of products will include various products such as FamilyHub refrigerators, Bespoke AI series' washing machines and induction cookers.

TapTechNews has learned from Samsung's relevant plans that these AI empowered products are expected to support many AI solutions previously only available for smartphones, and the voice recognition ability to understand complex commands and natural conversations is expected to be significantly enhanced.

Through the Bixby voice assistant enhanced by the large model, home appliances will be able to understand previously unlearned instructions or complex commands and remember the previous conversation content. It is reported that the number of home appliances connected to Samsung's IoT platform, SmartThings, has exceeded 20 million units, which is more than twice the 10 million units recorded in the second half of 2022. And by 2025, this number is expected to reach 30 million units.
