The agency said that the test has exceeded 10,000 hours currently, simulating the situation after 6 years of use of these TVs and displays, among which a distinct and disturbing trend was found.

The agency said that compared to other LCD TV designs such as DIRECTLIT backlight or FullArray Local Dimming (FALD), LCD TVs with EDGELIT backlight are more prone to serious durability problems.

The agency tested 11 LCD TVs with EDGELIT backlight, and 7 of them had obvious uniformity problems after the test. Among these 7 TVs, 2 are from LG and 5 are Samsung TVs.

The agency admitted that the sample size is a bit small, but judging from the test results, 64% of the LCD TVs with EDGELIT backlight have durability problems, while in the DIRECTLIT and FullArray Local Dimming TVs, the problem proportion is 20%.

TapTechNews briefly introduces about EDGELIT backlight:

In the EDGELIT backlight, there is a row of LED light emitters (usually white) along one, two or three edges of the backlight with a reflective film and coating, so that the light passes through the entire back of the LCD panel in a uniform way.

Advantages:

It makes the LCD panel thinner. If you see a very thin panel, then it is likely to use EDGELIT backlight.

Because it uses fewer LEDs to cover a larger display area, so the cost is lower.

Disadvantages:

There may be some brightness uniformity problems, resulting in a phenomenon of bright edges and dark middle of the screen.

The edge-lit displays have some size limitations, making them not suitable for large LCDs.

The ability to adjust the backlight according to the content is limited to improve contrast and save power. No matter what is displayed, the backlight is always on.
