Microsoft to Introduce New Checkpoint Cumulative Update Method for Windows 11 24H2

TapTechNews July 16th news, Microsoft Corporation today announced that it will introduce a brand-new checkpoint cumulative update method starting from the Windows 11 24H2 update, This is also the first major adjustment of the Windows update distribution method in nearly a decade.

TapTechNews briefly reviews the Microsoft Windows update mechanism:

Independent software packages

Before Microsoft launched the Windows 10 system, each Windows update was an independent software package.

So after users install the system, they may need to install a huge number of software packages, which is a veritable "patch carnival" in order to deploy and upgrade to the latest version.

Cumulative updates

Microsoft introduced the cumulative update mode in the Windows 10 system, and all updates are cumulative, and each cumulative update contains all the latest updates of the current Windows version.

Checkpoint updates

Microsoft has further improved the cumulative update mechanism in the Windows 11 system and plans to innovate and optimize the Windows update experience by creating a Checkpoint.

Microsoft said that starting from Windows 11 24H2, it will cumulatively generate checkpoints (Checkpoint) from the RTM version, and each update will check the difference from the last checkpoint to obtain functional and security enhancements with a small incremental difference.

This means that in the Windows 11 system update process, only the part that is different from the last checkpoint is downloaded to reduce the size of the user's download update package and improve the upgrade experience.

This process may be repeated many times, thereby generating multiple checkpoints during the life cycle of a specific Windows version. The Windows 11 24H2 service stack can merge all checkpoints and only download and install the content missing on the device.

Microsoft said that if users manage updates using Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, Windows Autopatch or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), then users do not need to manually adjust to obtain update improvements.
