Huawei's Smartphone Shipments Soar in Q2 2024 with Multiple Positive Developments

TapTechNews August 14th news, the market research institute TechInsights released a report this afternoon stating that driven by the recovery in the 5G field and the alleviation of supply chain restrictions, in the second quarter of 2024, Huawei's global smartphone shipments increased by 49% year-on-year, reaching 11.6 million units. At the same time, due to the large proportion of high-end models (Mate and Pura series combination), its wholesale average selling price (ASP) and wholesale revenue both reached record highs. The Chinese market is still Huawei's core market, accounting for 89% of its global smartphone shipments.

The agency said that Huawei's smartphone market performance in Q2 this year has the characteristics of an increased proportion of high-end models, faster growth in the folding screen market, and reduced reliance on foreign chip suppliers. TapTechNews summarizes as follows:

Increased proportion of high-end models: The Pura70 series mobile phone released in the second quarter this year is Huawei's first flagship model equipped with its self-developed 7nm chip (Kirin 9010) and entered the overseas high-end market, covering the price range of 5,500 yuan to 10,999 yuan. At the same time, the proportion of Pura and Mate series in Huawei's total shipments increased significantly year-on-year.

Faster growth in the folding screen market: The horizontal folding screen phone MateX series and the vertical folding screen phone Pocket series mobile phones increased by 400% and 50% respectively. Since 618 this year, Pocket2 has faced more intense competition because Honor's MagicVFlip has also joined the battle. This month, Huawei launched a new vertical folding screen phone NovaFlip, and the agency said it will drive the momentum of Huawei's clamshell folding screen phones in the Chinese market in the next few months.

Reduced reliance on foreign chip suppliers: Huawei's entry-level to mid-range models such as Enjoy 70, 70z, NovaY72, etc. have also switched to Kirin processors. The US government revoked the 4G export licenses of US companies such as Qualcomm and Intel, which will not have a substantial impact on Huawei's smartphone business, because Huawei has significantly reduced its reliance on imported chips.

The resistance faced by Apple leaves growth space for Huawei: Huawei's global shipment growth mainly benefits from the Asia-Pacific region, and China plays a key role in it. In this quarter, Huawei ranked third in the Chinese smartphone market. However, the lower-than-expected growth indicates that Huawei faces challenges in pricing strategy, quality control, and system optimization. More likely, the various obstacles faced by Apple in China (especially AppleIntelligence) will still leave growth space for Huawei in the high-end field in the local market.
