Samsung's Workforce and Working Hours Adjustments

TapTechNews on June 28, according to Taiwanese media DigiTimes, industry sources said that in the face of increasingly fierce competition from rivals in the OLED business, Samsung Display (SDC) is transferring internal technical staff (about 50 people) to the small and medium-sized OLED development department.

The report said the company also plans to apply for an extension of working hours and recently submitted a special request to the Korean Ministry of Employment and Labor, asking to extend the working hours of departments such as IT, artificial intelligence development, and Micro project teams, raising the ceiling to 64 hours per week, far exceeding the 52-hour ceiling stipulated by Korean labor laws.

Samsung Display has already transferred more than 500 R & D personnel from the large-sized OLED department to the small and medium-sized departments at the beginning of this year to further strengthen the workforce.

TapTechNews noted that as early as June 8, Korean media KoreaJoongAngDaily said that Samsung Electronics is launching a 64-hour workweek for its semiconductor research and development (R & D) and smartphone teams.

According to industry sources, the 64-hour policy currently applies to two teams: the R & D team of the Device Solutions (DS) department responsible for Samsung's chip business and some teams in the Mobile Experience of the mobile business department.

It is reported that the employees of the above-mentioned Samsung Electronics departments have signed contracts agreeing to extend working hours and currently work 64 hours per week.

In April this year, there was also news that the executives of Samsung SDI, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung SDS, and Samsung Display were recommended to work one day every two weekends (TapTechNews note: commonly known as big and small weeks). In response, the executives of the Samsung company cancelled the pre-booked weekend work.
