Meta to Release Multimodal Llama Model but Not in EU, Similar Decisions by US Tech Companies

TapTechNews July 18th news, according to Axios, Meta stated in a statement that they are about to release a multimodal Llama model, but due to the uncertainty of the regulatory environment, the model will not be released in the European Union.

Meta said that this decision also means that even if it is released under an open license, customers and companies in the European Union cannot use the multimodal model, and Meta will provide only text (textonly) Llama3 model to customers and companies in the European Union.

It is reported that Meta's problem is not the Artificial Intelligence Act, but how to use the data of EU customers to train the model while complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Meta said that training with local data is crucial for ensuring that its products correctly reflect the terminology and culture of the region.

Many US technology companies have made similar decisions. According to TapTechNews' previous report, Apple announced in June that due to regulatory issues, when its upcoming new systems such as iOS18 and macOS Sequoia are released this autumn, EU users will not be able to use functions such as Apple Intelligence.
