Computer Components Prices on the Rise in 2024

TapTechNews on May 20th, dear netizens, have you noticed that it's getting more and more expensive to assemble a computer nowadays? In addition to the two major components of CPU and GPU, the prices of memory and solid-state drives have also risen significantly, and basically all parts are in a state of price increase.

The price of solid-state drives has been at the historical lowest point until the fourth quarter of last year, and even the price of DDR5 memory seems to have bottomed out. However, all this will change in the second half of 2024. Based on the views of the XDA media, TapTechNews briefly introduces as follows:

Solid-State Drives

The tech media xda-developers tracked and observed the price of solid-state drives on the Amazon platform for the past 6-7 months. Starting from around October 2023, the price of solid-state drives has been continuously rising.

The prices of popular solid-state drives such as Crucial MX500 and Samsung 980Pro, compared with the prices in September 2023, have increased by approximately 75%-85%.

This rapid price increase is mainly the result of manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron steadily increasing the price of NAND flash memory, and it will increase by nearly 20% every quarter starting from 2024.

The media believes that the price of 1TB NVMe solid-state drives will climb to around $100, and the price will continue to rise in the remaining time of 2024, returning the storage market to the high point at the beginning of 2022.

DDR5 Memory

In addition to solid-state drives, the price of memory has also skyrocketed. Memory manufacturers have decided to allocate more resources and production capacity to HBM, resulting in a reduction in the production of DRAM. And reducing supply means that the price of consumer DDR5 memory will increase.

Reports show that these factors will lead to a 15%-20% increase in the price of DDR5 memory. Taking the 32GB memory kit (2 sticks of 16GB) as an example, users can buy it for only around $100, and in the future, they need to pay a premium of $20 to purchase it.

Considering that Intel's 15th-generation processors and AMD's Zen5 CPUs are about to be available, and the obsolescence of DDR4 memory products, then the mainstream computer assembly plan will recommend using the new platform, and will not recommend using Intel's 12th, 13th, or 14th-generation processors, AMD AM4 processors with DDR4 memory.
