China Mobile's Breakthrough in Wide-Area High-Throughput Technology

TapTechNews June 22 news, recently, China Mobile has conquered the industry problem of high-throughput transmission in the Long-FAT Network (referring to a network with long transmission distance and large bandwidth) for the vast amount of data and wide-area high-throughput transmission requirements. A mid-test verification of the world's longest distance of 5,000 kilometers ultra-long-distance and 70 Gbps ultra-high-throughput Data Express wide-area high-throughput technology has been completed between Harbin, Heilongjiang, and Guiyang, Guizhou.

This mid-test verification was carried out by China Mobile for the data backup scenario between IT clouds, based on the two major cloud data centers in Harbin and Guiyang of China Mobile and the cloud private network for data transmission, verifying multiple leading capabilities of the innovative technology of Data Express wide-area high-throughput.

First, ultra-long distance. The network transmission distance between China Mobile (Harbin) Data Center and China Mobile (Guiyang) Data Center exceeds 5,000 kilometers. After passing through various types of network equipment such as switches, gateways, routers, firewalls, and OTN, the distance is long and the equipment is heterogeneous, and the network traffic is complex.

Second, ultra-high throughput. Under a transmission distance of 5,000 kilometers, the effective throughput of the traditional wide-area transmission protocol is only about 14% of the 100G physical bandwidth. The wide-area high-throughput technology has achieved more than 70 Gbps effective throughput of 100G physical bandwidth through innovative realizations such as a new wide-area congestion control algorithm and a multi-stream concurrent transmission mechanism. 1 TBit of cloud disaster recovery data can be completed in less than 2 minutes, with an effective throughput increase of 5 times compared to the traditional protocol.

Third, plug-and-play. The wide-area high-throughput system is plug-and-play, only needs to be deployed on the end side, is compatible with the mainstream server platform, and has zero transformation cost for network equipment. No network upgrade cost.

TapTechNews has learned from public information that since 2020, China Mobile has started the research of Data Express wide-area high-throughput technology and has made several breakthroughs in innovative mechanisms such as reliable transmission protocol, wide-area congestion control algorithm, and rapid loss recovery. In October 2023, China Mobile achieved the first time in the industry to realize the stable transmission of large-scale data with a long distance of 2,200 kilometers from Guizhou to Beijing; in April 2024, a mid-test platform team for computing network integration was established and the mid-test verification of wide-area high-throughput technology was carried out.

China Mobile disclosed that this year, the task-oriented, high-throughput, safe and efficient product-level capability packaging, as well as the product trial runs in scenarios such as data migration and backup and big data collaborative computing will be completed to lay the foundation for opening relevant product capabilities to the outside world in the next step. This verification of the mid-test of the Data Express wide-area high-throughput technology marks that China's East Data West Computing also has the West-Electricity-East-Transmission and Ultra-High-Voltage-type key technologies to help the implementation of national strategies such as Network Powerhouse and Digital China.

China's East Data West Computing project was fully launched in February 2022, agreeing to start the construction of national computing power hub nodes in 8 places such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Chengdu-Chongqing, Inner Mongolia, Guizhou, Gansu, and Ningxia, and 10 national data center clusters were planned.
