TapTechNews May 28th, Adrian van Hooydonk, the design director of BMW Group, recently stated that the all-new concept car Skytop, which debuted at the just-ended Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy, may go into limited production of 20-25 units by 2026, and the final decision will depend on the response of potential customers.
Hooydonk revealed this news at the media event of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. He mentioned that if the demand is sufficient, BMW may produce Skytop for 20-25 lucky customers due to the high price of the classic Z8 model in the used car market. TapTechNews noted that although the Skytop concept car has the proportions of a luxury touring car, the convertible two-seat design and the V8 engine are similar to the Z8 roadster in 1998.
Skytop is based on the BMW M8 Competition and is equipped with the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine as the M8 Competition, which can provide a maximum power of 460 kilowatts and a peak torque of 750 Newton-meters. However, there are rumors that this engine may be further tuned for the limited edition Skytop. The transmission system is expected to match an 8-speed automatic transmission and the rear-biased MxDrive system.
