In Chongqing, the First Large-Scale Vehicle-Grid Interaction Application with New Energy Vehicles

TapTechNews August 25th news, according to Xinhua News Agency, on the evening of August 24th, Chongqing carried out large-scale vehicle-grid interaction application for the first time, guiding new energy vehicles to participate in off-peak charging, V2G reverse discharge, and access to virtual power plants to help the power grid reduce peak loads.

It is reported that V2G means the reverse power transmission from new energy vehicles to the power grid. Through V2G piles, new energy vehicle owners can obtain corresponding economic benefits and help reduce peak loads on the power grid. On the evening of the 24th, a total of 120 new energy vehicles participated in the pilot application of V2G large-scale reverse discharge, and the discharge lasted for 2 hours, with a cumulative reverse discharge of more than 1700 kilowatt-hours, which can meet the electricity demand of more than 420 household users for 1 hour.

On the evening of the 24th, a total of 75,600 new energy vehicles in Chongqing concentrated on participating in off-peak charging during the period of grid load valley, and at most, they gave way to more than 260,000 kilowatts of load during the peak electricity consumption period. At the same time, 88 charging piles also participated in grid peak shaving through the virtual power plant model, reducing the peak load of the grid by nearly 10,000 kilowatts.

TapTechNews noticed that the National Development and Reform Commission, the National Energy Administration, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the State Administration for Market Regulation released the Implementation Opinions on Strengthening the Integration and Interaction between New Energy Vehicles and the Power Grid in January this year, putting forward a series of tasks and goals for vehicle-grid interaction and bidirectional charging and discharging of new energy vehicles.

The development goals mentioned in the Opinions point out that by 2025, the technical standard system of vehicle-grid interaction in China will be initially established, the peak-valley electricity price mechanism for charging will be fully implemented and continuously optimized, important progress will be made in the construction of market mechanisms, and efforts will be made to carry out pilot demonstrations of vehicle-grid interaction. It is strived that in the cities participating in the pilot demonstration, more than 60% of the charging electricity throughout the year in 2025 will be concentrated in the low valley period, and more than 80% of the charging electricity of private charging piles will be concentrated in the low valley period. The potential of new energy vehicles as a mobile electrochemical energy storage resource will be initially verified through pilot demonstrations.

By 2030, the technical standard system of vehicle-grid interaction in China will be basically established, the market mechanism will be more perfect, vehicle-grid interaction will achieve large-scale application, and intelligent and orderly charging will be fully promoted. New energy vehicles will become an important part of the electrochemical energy storage system, and it is strived to provide the power system with a bidirectional flexibility adjustment capacity of tens of millions of kilowatts.
