Apple to Launch New 'Passwords' App Next Week

TapTechNews June 7th news, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman wrote early this morning Beijing time, citing sources, that Apple will introduce a new first-party app - Passwords next week, which allows users to log in to accounts on websites and apps more easily.

According to sources cited by Gurman, Apple is planning for this new app to become part of iOS/iPadOS 18 and macOS 15. The app can generate and track passwords and will be officially announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 11th Beijing time.

This app will be supported by Apple's existing iCloudKeychain (TapTechNews note: with this service, users can synchronize passwords and account information between different devices, which used to usually be found only in Settings or when users log in to their accounts). Now, this feature will be transformed into a dedicated app. Apple is attempting to get more people to use secure passwords and enhance the privacy protection of devices, but it also intensifies the competition with third-party software.

It is reported that the new App will challenge older password management apps like 1Password and LastPass, and Apple will allow users to import passwords from competitors' services.

Specifically, Apple's password manager will provide a user login list and divide detailed information into different categories such as accounts, Wi-Fi passwords and Passkeys, etc. These data will be automatically filled in when users log in to various platforms. This app will be supported for use on the VisionPro headset and Windows PC, and can also be used as an authentication app similar to Google Authenticator.
