Google's Ferrochrome Project A Proof of Concept for Android

TapTechNews May 17th news, it is said that Google is developing the Ferrochrome project that can run ChromeOS on Android phones such as Pixel 8, but the latest news indicates that this project is only a proof of concept.

Developer Mishaal Rahman recently attended the I/O 2024 Developer Conference, chatting with Android team executives such as David Burke and Sameer Samat, and talking about the Ferrochrome project.

In the communication, the Android team said that the Ferrochrome project mainly invokes the Android Virtualization Framework (AVF) framework introduced in the Android 13 system, which provides a private and isolated environment for running sensitive codes and only supports ARM64 devices such as Pixel 8. Google has improved the AVF in the Android 15 system to better invoke the GPU for acceleration.

TapTechNews learned from the report that the Ferrochrome project is currently in the proof-of-concept stage, mainly to test the capabilities of the AVF through this project, and what interesting challenges will be brought when running Ferrochrome on Android devices.

Google has not disclosed the future plan of the Ferrochrome project, but it may develop into a mature function with the support of Google's hardware partners.
