AMD Ryzen 9000 Series Desktop Processors Unveiled at Computex Taipei

AMD premiered the first batch of Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors at the just-held 2024 Computex Taipei. At the same time, they also released the X870 and X870E chipset and promised that the AM5 socket would be updated at least until 2027.

In addition, AMD also showcased several motherboards based on the X870 chipset, including brands such as MSI, ASRock, and Biostar. However, the number of exhibited X870 motherboards is significantly fewer. According to HardwareLuxx, X870/X870E motherboards will not be available at the same time as the Ryzen 9000 series processors but rather a bit later.

The good news is that the Ryzen 9000 series processors are fully compatible with the existing 600 series motherboards, and AMD has already been preparing for BIOS firmware updates, so the new-generation motherboards do not have to keep up with the CPU release rhythm.

It should be noted that Intel's ArrowLake-S (Core Ultra 200K) processors won't be available until the fourth quarter, while the AMD Ryzen 9000 series will be released next month. And Intel doesn't allow any manufacturer to mention the Z890 chipset for now. So it is still unknown whether the Intel Z890 motherboard can be launched earlier than the AMD X870/X870E motherboard.

Although not in large numbers, the X870 motherboard still received quite a good attention at this Computex Taipei. At least it's not as secretive as Intel. And AMD has no restrictions on the display of these motherboards, but most manufacturers are not ready yet. For example, MSI only showed two motherboards, and neither are high-end models.

According to TapTechNews' previous reports, the new X870 and X870E chipset are compatible with the existing Ryzen 7000 and 8000 series processors. AMD promises to support USB4.0 on all X870 and X870E motherboards and support PCIe 5.0 GPU and NVMe. The new chipset also supports faster AMD EXPO (DDR5 memory overclocking profile) with a speed of up to 8000 MT/s. The main difference between X870E and X870 is that the former has two chipsets and more interfaces.
