Microsoft's New "Recall" Feature and Its Extension to Older Computers with Amperage

TapTechNews June 2nd news, Microsoft launched a brand-new feature named "Recall" at the Copilot artificial intelligence and Surface new product launch event in May. This powerful tool based on artificial intelligence can help users find any content they have browsed on their computers before. However, Microsoft stated at that time that this function is only limited to the new Copilot+ series computers equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU). Recently, the developer Albacore has released an unofficial tool named Amperage, which can enable some older computers to also run the "Recall" function.

TapTechNews noticed that currently, Amperage only supports computers running Windows 11 24H2 version 26100.712 and using Arm64 architecture processors, such as devices equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon, Microsoft SQ series, and Ampere chipsets. It should be noted that due to the lack of necessary components to activate the "Recall" function, other versions of Windows 11 systems do not currently support Amperage. However, as Copilot+ series computers using AMD and Intel processors go on the market later this year, the Amperage tool may be able to support more devices to run the "Recall" function in the future.

The working principle of the "Recall" function is to take screenshots during the user's use of the computer and store them on the local device, and then the system uses the local small multi-modal language model to recognize the text, images, and video content therein. By searching the timeline generated by "Recall", users can easily find previously browsed pictures, websites, documents, and even emails and other contents. Even if the user cannot remember the exact keywords, they can still search based on some vague clues.
