According to the plan, the first batch of electric vans will start to be used across the UK in August, and the number will reach more than half of the total deployment before the shopping season at the end of December to provide more environmentally friendly delivery services during the peak season.

The Royal Mail already has the largest fleet of electric vans in the UK, currently about 5,000. The Royal Mail stated that after the 2,100 new electric vans are put into use, it is expected to reduce about 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

TapTechNews noticed that the Royal Mail also introduced hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) to power heavy-duty vans last year. This is a renewable fuel, and compared to regular diesel, its direct carbon emissions can be reduced by up to 90%. The Royal Mail started using this fuel in June 2023 and has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30,000 tons.

The director of corporate affairs of the Royal Mail, Jenny Hall, said: We are proud to take another big step towards the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040. Electric vehicles offer a wide range of benefits, reducing noise and air pollution in local communities, and also reducing our impact on the environment. We hope that as many customers as possible can enjoy the benefits of zero-emission delivery to the door.
