Sohu's 2024 Q2 Financial Report Revenue Growth and Game Performance

TapTechNews August 5th news, Sohu Inc. today announced its unaudited financial report for the second quarter of 2024 ending June 30, 2024. Sohu's total revenue in the second quarter was 172 million US dollars, an increase of 13% from the same period in 2023 and a 24% increase from the previous quarter. The net loss attributable to Sohu Inc. under US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles was 38 million US dollars. The net loss in the same period of 2023 was 21 million US dollars, and the net loss in the previous quarter was 25 million US dollars. The net loss attributable to Sohu Inc. under non-US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles was 34 million US dollars. The net loss in the same period of 2023 was 18 million US dollars, and the net loss in the previous quarter was 22 million US dollars.

TapTechNews noticed that Sohu's brand advertising revenue in the second quarter was 20 million US dollars, a 17% decrease from the same period in 2023 and a 24% increase from the previous quarter. Online game revenue was 147 million US dollars, an increase of 24% from the same period in 2023 and a 25% increase from the previous quarter. The gross margins under both US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and non-US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles were 67%, both 76% in the same period of 2023, and both 77% in the previous quarter.

In terms of PC client games, the total average monthly active users in the second quarter of Sohu was 2.2 million, a 2% increase from the same period in 2023 and a 2% decrease from the previous quarter. The total number of active paying users in the quarter was 900,000, a 3% decrease from the same period in 2023 and an 8% decrease from the previous quarter. The sequential decrease in the number of paying users was mainly due to the reduction of promotional activities launched by Tianlong online game in this quarter compared to the previous quarter.

In terms of mobile games, the total average monthly active users in the second quarter of Sohu was 4.9 million, a 273% increase from the same period in 2023 and a 77% increase from the previous quarter. The total number of active paying users in the quarter was 1.1 million, a 299% increase from the same period in 2023 and a 240% increase from the previous quarter. The year-on-year and sequential growth of active users and paying users was mainly due to the user growth brought by Journey to the West: Painting the Westward Journey launched in this quarter.
