TapTechNews July 14th news, the Nothing company launched the first smartphone of its CMF sub-brand on July 8th - CMFPhone1. This phone is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset, and the biggest highlight is that the back cover can be replaced by users themselves. The starting price is 15,999 Indian rupees (TapTechNews note: currently about 1396 Chinese yuan).

In order to make CMFPhone1 affordable, the Nothing company adopted a 50MP main camera + 2MP depth of field configuration for the rear camera module of this phone. However, a user @IfeelNothing found that the depth of field camera of this phone does not have an infrared filter, so it has a certain perspective ability and can shoot the internal structure of some items. Although the official camera application cannot directly call this depth of field lens to shoot, it can be called through a third-party application.

In response, Akis Evangelidis, the co-founder of Nothing, responded that they will limit the access of third-party applications to the phone's built-in depth of field camera in the future. It is expected to launch a software update for adjustment within one week.

At Nothing, we have some of the most knowledgeable and highly skilled users in the world. At the same time, our popularity has also attracted a lot of attention. This attention has ultimately driven continuous improvement and benefited users, so we think this is a good thing.

In this case, although there are hundreds of millions of such camera depth sensors on the market, a CMFPhone1 user obtained the output of the depth sensor through a third-party application in the developer mode and achieved the perspective effect. Let me explain how this works.

We use triangulation to collect the images of the depth sensor and the main camera to generate depth of field data to create a clipping effect and apply a blur effect in portrait mode with a specific algorithm.

Unlike typical cameras, our depth sensor does not have an infrared filter, thereby enhancing its ability to capture light. In theory, this includes infrared light, which can sometimes reveal the internal structure of thin or semi-transparent objects, especially when it is a black acrylic material.

Although users cannot access the output of the depth sensor through the Nothing camera application, we understand that this may cause some concerns. Therefore, we will limit the access of third-party applications to the output of the depth sensor through a software update within one week.
