Microsoft Sued by EU Antitrust Regulator for Bundling Teams with Office

On June 25, TapTechNews reported that on Tuesday local time, the EU antitrust regulator announced that it had filed a lawsuit against Microsoft, accusing it of illegally bundling Teams with its Office products for sale, which violated the EU antitrust regulations.

The EU antitrust regulator pointed out that Microsoft's recent move to split the bundle is still not perfect enough and more work needs to be done. The commission initially believes that these changes are not enough to address its concerns, and more changes to Microsoft's behavior are required to restore competition.

TapTechNews found that Teams was added to Office 365 in 2017 and later replaced Skype for Business. Due to the need for a large number of remote workers to use its video conference function during the pandemic, Teams' popularity has soared in some areas.

In July 2020, Slack, a subsidiary of Salesforce, filed a complaint with the EU on this ground, accusing Microsoft of engaging in anti-competitive behavior by bundling Teams with the market-dominant Office. In response, Microsoft said it would split the Teams software in Europe. But since this measure did not satisfy the EU regulator, Microsoft still needs to continue to find solutions to address its concerns.
