China's Draft for Consultation on Passenger Car Braking System Standards and the 'Single-Pedal Mode'

TapTechNews May 30th news, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on May 27th, in accordance with the Law of the People's Republic of China on Standardization and the Administrative Measures for Compulsory National Standards, the First Department of Equipment Industry of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology organized the National Technical Committee on Automobile Standardization to carry out the formulation and revision of five compulsory national standards such as Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Passenger Car Braking Systems, and has formed the draft for consultation, and is now publicly soliciting opinions from all sectors of society.

TapTechNews found from the draft of Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Passenger Car Braking Systems that the following additional requirements for vehicles equipped with electric regenerative braking systems are added:

For vehicles of Type A and those with both Type A and Type B electric regenerative braking systems, the braking effect achieved by releasing the accelerator pedal in the forward gear cannot cause the vehicle to decelerate to a stop.

The document stated that in recent years, as the application of Type A electric regenerative braking system technology has gradually become widespread, since the driver has long controlled the accelerator pedal to achieve braking and stopping, it may lead to the formation of corresponding driving habits, and there may be misoperation such as misstepping in emergency braking conditions. In order to clarify the positioning of Type A electric regenerative as an auxiliary braking, this requirement is proposed on the basis of sufficient industry research and discussion, aiming to guide drivers to develop good driving habits and ensure driving safety. And considering the current situation of industry technology and products, this clause gives a separate transition period time.

The 'braking effect achieved by releasing the accelerator pedal to cause the vehicle to decelerate to a stop' mentioned in the file is also the previously controversial'single-pedal mode'. When the driver does not step on the accelerator pedal, the vehicle will gradually decelerate until it stops, and even the brake pedal does not need to be stepped on.

In May 2023, Tesla announced the recall of more than 1.1 million cars in China, adjusting the factory default state of the vehicle energy recovery braking strategy, and providing an option on vehicles without the energy recovery braking intensity selection to allow the driver to select the energy recovery braking intensity.
