The patent is titled Electronic Devices with Durable Folding Displays and focuses on exploring how to improve the durability of the folding screen through process improvement.

In the patent description, Apple writes: A groove can be formed in the glass layer that extends along a bending axis. The groove can form a flexible locally thinned portion in the glass layer to allow the glass layer to bend around the bending axis. TapTechNews attaches the relevant patent diagram as follows:

Apple explores two plans to improve the durability of the folding screen in the patent, one is to reduce the thickness of the folded and bent parts and make the glass thinner; the other is to make other parts of the screen thicker.

Apple said: In order to ensure that the display cover layer shows satisfactory impact resistance during the drop process, other parts of the display cover layer except the locally thinned part, especially the corner parts and other edge parts can be further thickened.

If a folding iPhone or iPad drops to the ground, one corner is likely to suffer the most damage. Therefore, this may be that Apple has foreseen the future needs and managed to solve the current problem.
