Corning stated that the reason for launching 7i is mainly that many devices are still using Gorilla Glass Generation 5, which was launched in 2016, so it has a history of 8 years. There are even mobile phones (such as Pixel 8a) that use Gorilla Glass Generation 3 (released in 2013).

Corning and its partners believe that it is necessary to launch a more modern product, but this product must not only meet a more moderate budget but also conform to the recent trend of equipping high-quality displays on mid-range models.

TapTechNews attaches the following introduction of this product by Corning official:

In the tests in Corning's laboratory, Gorilla Glass 7i can drop from a height of up to 1 meter to the simulated asphalt surface and remain intact. While some other lithium aluminosilicate glasses on the market generally show damage when dropping from a height of 0.5 meter or even lower.

Moreover, the scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass 7i is twice that of some other lithium aluminosilicate cover glasses on the market.

Gorilla Glass 7i is mainly for mid-range phones and more affordable phones. 7 represents the seventh generation, and i represents industry-leading innovation for mid-range devices.
