BYD Establishes 'Tianxuan' Department, Shifts Focus in Intelligent Driving

TapTechNews June 19th, according to multiple independent sources cited by Interface News today, BYD separated the self-developed team of the Intelligent Driving R & D Center in the Planning Institute last week and established a separate 'Tianxuan' development department, with the person in charge being Xu Lingyun, the former intelligent driving director of HiPhi Automobile. The organizational structure of this development department is at the same level as the Intelligent Driving Center.

BYD has not yet responded to Interface News' request for comment for the time being. It is reported that Xu Lingyun joined BYD last September and served as the person in charge of the self-developed perception team, reporting to Han Bing, the person in charge of the Intelligent Driving Center in the Planning Institute. After this structural adjustment, Xu Lingyun reports directly to Yang Dongsheng, the dean of the BYD Planning Institute.

Cited by an internal source, Xu Lingyun is said to have the ability to implement intelligent driving R & D from scratch, and he promoted the mass production of the intelligent driving algorithm of HiPhi Automobile during his tenure there.

In terms of scale, the Tianxuan development department currently has less than 400 people and is still in the stage of internal personnel integration. People familiar with the situation said that the Tianxuan development department will form full-stack self-developed capabilities in many aspects such as perception, positioning, planning, control, underlying software, tool development, and data flywheel.

Correspondingly, the Intelligent Driving Center led by Han Bing will focus on supplier integration solutions. Public reports show that BYD's cooperative intelligent driving suppliers include Horizon Robotics, Black Sesame Intelligent, Momenta, DJI and many other domestic leading companies.

According to TapTechNews' previous reports, BYD held a 'Dream Day' event in January this year and released a brand new strategy for the intelligent development of new energy vehicles Whole Vehicle Intelligence. The璇玑 intelligent architecture released by BYD at that time was claimed to realize the integration of electrification and intelligence, break the barriers between different systems, be able to capture the changes of the internal and external environment in real time, summarize and feedback the information to one 'brain' for thinking and decision-making within milliseconds, and quickly adjust the 'body' state of the vehicle, greatly improving the driving safety and comfort. At the same time, Whole Vehicle Intelligence makes the car understand people better and realizes more personalized settings.
