Data within the 12 months as of March 2024 shows that 67% of iPad repeat purchasers will keep their old iPads or pass them on to family and friends.

This is in sharp contrast to iPhone users, where only 41% of users will keep or give away their old phones. About one-third of old iPads will be passed on to family or friends, while this proportion for old iPhones is about 10%.

This indicates that even if the iPad is replaced, its popularity and usability remain high, thereby reducing the urgency to upgrade to a newer model. This behavior is in sharp contrast to that of iPhone users, who are more inclined to trade in for a new device.

Nearly half of iPhone upgrade users will trade in their old devices, taking advantage of the secondary market and high trade-in value. In contrast, only less than 10% of iPad upgrade users choose to trade in.

23% of iPad upgrade users said that the reason for replacing the old device is loss, theft or damage, while the proportion of iPhones upgraded for such reasons is only 6%. This shows that the frequent replacement of iPads is out of necessity rather than the desire to upgrade.
