Audacity 3.6.0 Released with New Features and Bug Fixes

Audacity is one of the most popular free cross-platform open-source audio editors. It can be downloaded and used on Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux devices, and has been maintained and updated for a long time with rich features.

Audacity 3.6.0 has now been released, and some of the update contents are as follows:

Major Changes

  • Master Effects
    Audacity now supports master effects. Master effects refer to the effects applied to the entire project at once. More detailed information can be found in Using master effects & realtime effects .

  • New Compressor and Limiter
    A new compressor and limiter have been added to replace the previous versions. When these effects are used as real-time effects, a gain reduction history has been added. Vladislav Isaev and Marek Iwaszkiewicz have provided factory presets suitable for various scenarios, which can be obtained through the Presets & Settings button.

  • New Themes
    Audacity now offers brand new and improved dark and light themes. You can switch between themes through Preferences -> Interface . The previously used themes still exist as classic themes, and earlier themes can be selectively installed as custom themes fromhere. Updated instructions on creating custom themes can be found here.

  • Performance Improvement
    Audacity now has significantly improved performance when dealing with large projects and working on large screens.

Other Changes

  • Increased FFmpeg 7 support.
  • Now you can use Ctrl+V to paste audio files into Audacity.
  • Now you can set Alternative waveform colors through custom themes.
  • Removed the track name overlay preference setting and the blend themes preference setting.
  • Scripting: Added GetInfo:Type=Selection.
  • Added the Extras> Export > Export Selected Audio option.
  • Importing raw data: Added support for offsets greater than 2 GB.
  • Redesigned the what's new dialog.
  • Added an option in the View menu to show/hide the RMS in the waveform.
  • OpenVINO AI effect can now be downloaded from audacityteam.org/download/openvino/.

Bug Fixes

  • #6340 When recording to a new track, the track now scrolls back into view again.
  • #3825 The macro manager no longer shows parameterless operations as editable.
  • #6138 Pressing Esc in some preference dialogs no longer saves the settings.
  • #4504 Fixed stray orange lines in high contrast themes.
  • #5626 Fixed the quality slider for Ogg export on Linux.
  • #6875 Fixed a bug that might open a project with the wrong sample rate.
  • Various compiler warnings fixed and OpenBSD build fixes.
