Volkswagen to Recall Nearly 80,000 ID.4 Vehicles in the US Due to Software Vulnerability

TapTechNews May 25th news, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) announced on May 23rd that Volkswagen will recall nearly 80,000 ID.4 vehicles in the US market. The reason is that a software vulnerability may cause the LCD instrument cluster and central control screen to go black, presenting a collision risk.

Volkswagen said that some software versions may lead to the inability of the in-car display to start or sporadic resets, resulting in the loss of speedometer information or the loss of rearview camera images, which means that the vehicle does not comply with the relevant provisions of Controls and Displays and Rear Visibility in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

TapTechNews note: This recall involves a total of 79,953 vehicles, including 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4 models produced between March 6, 2020 and November 2, 2023.

Volkswagen has informed the owners through dealers and will do so by July 12, and the problem can be fixed through a free software update.

Volkswagen Group's Product Safety Committee discovered the potential software error in May 2023 and conducted an investigation for several months but failed to find a clear root cause.

In the meeting with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last month, Volkswagen was informed that the software vulnerability affected the compliance of FMVSS and needed to be resolved through a recall.

According to Volkswagen, from April 4, 2023 to February 27, 2024, there were 354 warranty claims related to this issue.
