TikTok Pays Microsoft nearly $20m monthly for OpenAI model, may develop own

TapTechNews August 1st news, according to the report of TheInformation on the 31st local time, as of March this year, TikTok pays Microsoft nearly 20 million US dollars (TapTechNews note: currently about 145 million yuan) every month to purchase the OpenAI model through Microsoft. This amount almost accounts for a quarter of Microsoft's AI revenue, and also makes TikTok one of the largest customers of Microsoft's AI services.

In the competition in the global cloud computing market, Microsoft has successfully transformed its cloud service into a lucrative business by integrating OpenAI's artificial intelligence technology. Microsoft's cloud AI business is expected to achieve annual revenue of 1 billion US dollars (currently about 7.248 billion yuan), but the report points out that if TikTok develops its own large language model, it may no longer need to rely so heavily on these (from Microsoft) capabilities.

The report says that ByteDance is trying to build its own AI model. Foreign media TheVerge once claimed in December last year that ByteDance even used OpenAI's technology to achieve these goals.

The current dilemma is not actually new in the rapidly developing AI field. Nvidia is also facing a similar situation to Microsoft. As an AI chip manufacturer, Nvidia's business is highly concentrated among giant technology companies. But these customers, including Microsoft, have used Nvidia's hardware to build their own AI chips, raising concerns among investors and analysts that in the end some of Nvidia's customers will no longer need its products.
