STMicroelectronics to Build World's First Fully Vertical Integrated SiC Factory in Italy

TapTechNews May 31st - STMicroelectronics today announced that it will build the world's first fully vertically integrated silicon carbide (SiC) factory in Catania, Italy.

In this park, STMicroelectronics will integrate the entire R & D and production links of the SiC industry chain from substrate development to epitaxial growth, front-end wafer manufacturing, and even back-end packaging and testing to improve the production efficiency of SiC products.

STMicroelectronics will invest a cumulative 5 billion euros (TapTechNews note: currently about 39.25 billion yuan) in this project, and the Italian government will provide about 2 billion euros in financial support for this project within the framework of the EU Chip Act.

The new SiC factory of STMicroelectronics is expected to start operations in 2026 and reach full capacity production by 2033, with a production capacity of 15,000 8-inch SiC wafers per week in its complete state.

Jean-Marc Chery, president and CEO of STMicroelectronics, said:

The fully integrated capabilities unleashed by the Catania SiC Park will make a significant contribution to STMicroelectronics' leading position in SiC technology in the automotive and industrial customer segments in the coming decades.

The scale and synergy provided by this project will allow us to better utilize large-volume manufacturing capabilities for innovation and benefit our European and global customers.

Because they are transitioning to electrification and looking for more energy-efficient solutions to achieve their decarbonization goals.
